A Time for Will

Can Lissie live with Will’s 19th century attitudes? Or does he need to show her who’s boss one more time?

Blurb:

Identical twins, Verity and Felicity (Lissie) Pettigrew inherit an abandoned farm in the remote hills of the Methow Valley. Little do the twins know, but their windfall harbors a secret. While exploring the old barn, Verity stumbles into a hidden portal and is instantly transported more than one hundred years into the past.

In 1885, on the same farm, Will Dawson is saddling his horse when a disturbance in a corner of the barn catches his attention. In his haste to rescue the gorgeous woman in the center of the disturbance, Will is flung far into the future.

Meanwhile, Lissie arrives on the farm looking for Verity, but finds the handsome, slightly suspicious cowboy instead. From their first words to one another, sparks fly.

Lissie’s modern manners and profane language offend Will. His solution? Some old-fashioned discipline delivered on the spot.

Affronted by Will’s distinctly un-twenty-first century approach to male/female relationships, Lissie challenges his authority at every turn in spite of nearly always ending up over his knee.

Meanwhile, Verity must deal with life in 1885. Although accepted into Will’s family, she longs to get back to the 21st century and the man she loves.

Can Will live in a future in which progress comes at the price of everything he holds dear? Can Lissie win him over, and teach him that women can be independent and willful but still soft and sexy? Will Verity find her way back to the man she loves?

Publishers note: This stand alone love story includes scenes of domestic discipline and spicy romance.

The man was tall, over six feet, with broad shoulders and a slim waist. Clean-shaven with intense silver-grey eyes, he didn’t look happy to see them. This had to be another one of Verity’s practical jokes. His denim jeans, leather vest with deep pockets, and old-fashioned Stetson were straight from a costume store. His thin cotton shirt hugged him like a second skin, emphasizing his buff body. The only worrying detail was the gun and holster set.

Lissie pointed her chin at the revolver in his hand. “That’s not a very nice way to greet your hosts,” she said, trying to ignore the blood pounding in her ears. Verity had pulled some major pranks in her time but this was the first time she’d hired an actor to point a gun at her sisters. At least Verity had hired a hottie for this job.

“Who are you? Why are the two of you wearing men’s clothes?” The man frowned as he spoke, his slow drawl sounding out of place in the 21st century, even in this small country town.

“Who are you and what are you doing lighting fires on our land?” Lissie smiled sweetly, waiting for Verity to spring out of the bushes, yelling gotcha.

“I’m the one with the gun. Maybe you’d better start talking. My name is William Dawson. Mr. Dawson to you.”

“We’re innocent cowgirls, looking for our sister, Mr. Dawson, sir.” Even as she heaped on the sarcasm, it started to occur to Lissie this might not be a joke. His tone had been disapproving. Impatience still clouded his eyes. That made her bolder, if only to draw his attention away from Hope. “I’m Felicity and this is my sister, Hope. That’s Felicity and Hope to you.” Now might be a time not to give him too much information, she decided.

“I’ve been here a couple of hours now and you’re the first people I’ve seen.” He kept eyeing the truck nervously.

Lissie watched him. “What’s wrong with you? Never seen an F350 before?”

“No.” He looked at the girls one more time before slipping his gun back into its holster. “I don’t even know what an F350 is.”

“C’mon,” Lissie chided. “Have you been living under a rock? An F350 is a truck. They’re everywhere. This is mine.” She pointed to the blue one she’d just hopped out of. “And this one here belongso my sister. Verity came out here earlier today. She was going to organize the kitchen and bedrooms. Tomorrow the electricians are going to turn on the electricity to the house.”

“Electricity,” Will sounded out the word, as if it was Latin or Greek. “I’ve heard of that.”

Hope burst out laughing. “Okay, Verity,” she said to the bushes, “good joke. You can come out now.”

“I told you,” he said fiercely, “I’m the only one here.”

Lissie grinned. “I believe you, cowboy.” To keep his eyes off Hope, she moved closer, swinging her hips. In case he was some sort of psycho, she needed to do everything she could to save her little sister. She moved with far more confidence than she felt. As she approached him, she caught his grass, leather, and onions scent. It was a primal smell that spoke of hard work and honest labor. It was far more appealing than she wanted it to be.

If he was part of a practical joke, she’d make Verity pay. If he was something more dangerous than that, she wanted all his attention focused on her.  “What do you do when you’re not pranking innocent girls? Are you a movie extra or something?”

He narrowed his eyes at her as she sidled her body next to his.

She brushed some dust from his shoulder. “I’ve been asking Santa for someone like you my entire life. I guess the wait was worth it.” She ran her hand over the front of his leather vest. “This is nice and soft, just like your lips, I bet.” She made a kissy face at him.

He caught her wrist. “What sort of a girl are you, talking to a man like that?” His grey eyes glinted with outrage.

“I’m a modern sort of a girl,” she said. “I take what I like.” She reached with her other hand and stroked the dark hair that curled around his ears and under his hat. “Nice.”

Before she could register what he was doing, he grabbed her hands and pinned them behind her back. His long, muscular fingers held her two wrists together effortlessly.

Author Spotlight: Libby Campbell is here with Holding Cynthia

Holding Cynthia
(Romancing the Coast, book 2)

Can a diehard feminist like Cynthia learn to obey an indomitable man like Antony?

Where do you find inspiration for writing?

In the world around me: in what I read, what I see, what I hear on the news. Stories pop up in my head constantly but there’s a lot of chaff in that wheat.

One thing for sure, once I’m writing a novel, I’m always surprised at how the universe starts to ‘speak’ to me about it. For instance when I found the perfect house for Simon and Sadie to buy in Sadie Says I Do, I wondered what obstacle might make it hard for them to move in quickly. Later that same week, I read an article about a prominent Canadian whose house sale was snarled up with liens by the Canada Revenue Agency (our tax office)

If you could travel to any time, what time period would you like to explore?

I’d love to visit Victorian England if I could live as one of the upper classes. My roots are English but, on my mother’s side at least, my family were the ruled, not the ruling class.

I’d want to be the Victorian lady with a handsome, stern but loving husband who lets her sleep until 9, shop for fine clothes, and play cards until early morning hours.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spots are quiet and remote; I don’t seek bright lights. I’ve spent months in the Australian outback which I adored.

These days, my husband and I frequently escape to Salt Spring Island, in the Canadian Gulf Islands (the other half of Washington State’s San Juan Islands). Seguro Island in the Simon in Charge series and Seeing Ronnie is a fictional island based on Salt Spring. A lot of the features are the same: the lovely ferry ride to get there, the Saturday markets, the wonderful hiking trails in the forest, and the history of the blacks who moved there to escape slavery.

We love Salt Spring because of the lack of light pollution. On summer nights we sit on the lawn, listening to the frogs, watching the bats come out to feed, while counting shooting stars.

Blurb:

Antony Jacobson first held Cynthia Donohue in his arms at a wintry December wedding. Four months later, the statuesque, silver-haired woman continues to haunt his thoughts.

Cynthia is about to move to the West Coast to be closer her daughter. As her plane touches down in her new city, she steels herself to cope on her own. When she finds Antony waiting at the arrivals gate, a wave of gratitude and desire floods through her.

A lifetime of independence hasn’t prepared Cynthia for a submissive role in a relationship. She craves love, romance, and someone to share sunsets. But deep down she believes her dreams are out of her reach. Worse, they are a betrayal of her feminist principles. That’s fine: indomitable, handsome Antony will wait.

She is tired and aching beyond all memory so Antony takes charge. Very quickly, he realizes there is something wrong, very wrong, with Cynthia’s health. He insists that she see a doctor.

She says he is overprotective. He agrees. He is also determined to look after her if she won’t look after herself. A trip over his knee shakes Cynthia to the core. In spite of herself she likes – she wants – this loving correction. More importantly, she agrees that he may be right about seeing a doctor.

Is Antony too much, too soon, or is he just what the doctor ordered?

Excerpt

Antony pulled his hand back and crossed his arms over his chest. “And when I dropped you at the massage center, what did I say?”

“You said I could call you for a ride home.”

“No, I told you to call me.”

“Told, asked. Same difference.”

“You may be a whiz at French, but you obviously need a few lessons in the English language. When I tell you to do something, it’s not multiple choice, pick the most appealing option. It’s an order, pure and simple. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I get what you’re saying.”

“And when you fail to obey me, there will be consequences. I want that clearly understood.”

“Con-se-quences,” Cynthia said the word slowly, pronouncing the se syllable as say, as if she were speaking French. She dragged it out to delay answering. “Would you care to elaborate?”

“Remember when I warned you that last night’s smack might just be a starter if you didn’t behave?”

She nodded.

“I wasn’t kidding. When you fail to look after yourself, I will spank you.”

His words hung in the air between them like a sudden frost.

Her mouth was chalk dry. “Spank me?”

“Yes, spank you. Bare your bottom and turn you over my knee. I want to keep seeing you. I want to see you well, managing your health sensibly. Obviously you’re forgotten how to do that over the years and you need some supervision. My supervision. And when you disobey me, I will punish you in the good, old-fashioned way. Do you understand?” His voice was level, calm. Most of all it was authoritative.

“What? You think I’m going to just submit to that?” Even as she asked the question her pussy clenched with desire and her fingers itched to touch him, to say yes with caresses. She wanted her body to consent so she wouldn’t have to say the words out loud.

“That is exactly what I think, Cindy.” He emphasized Cindy in a way that said he was going to use that name affectionately and proprietarily whether she agreed or not. He was telling her what the conditions of seeing him would be as if he sensed, quite rightly, that this was what she wanted.

Taking Their Human by Aubrey Cara Excerpt:

They’re behemoths.

Trying to calm my breathing, I take them in. Their clothes are made out of material I’ve never seen before, all in black. Their t-shirts look almost normal, but their tight fitting cargo pants seem almost like wet suit material and are lined with body armor- like padding along the front. “I am Cal, and this is my brother Kein,” the one on the left says in English, his voice dark and dangerous.

Twins. So not clones.

As perfectly identical as they are, I instinctively know the one on the right, Kein is the one who called me their mercy. And, lord help me, I had wanted to be just that. I hate myself for finding them the least bit intriguing. They took me when I was out of my mind and had no control. But I was riding some strange tide of lust, and the way he looked at me was so raw. So full of need.

He’s not staring at me that way today. Their matching taciturn stares make me shiver, their faces pulled down in authoritative lines. My gaze skitters away, ending my perusal of the pair.

When I woke up on that horrible exam table, Kein’s gaze filled me with something akin to warmth. I felt comforted. Strangely safe. I’ve kept that with me for days, using it to bolster my strength. Telling myself the lie they may be on my side.

Now, their blank masked expressions leave me on edge. I try to calm my nerves and appear as unaffected as they are. I doubt it’s working.

Thinking about what these powerful strangers did to me I flush. I should feel debased. Violated. In a way I guess I do, but this aching awareness is disturbing in its intensity.

I hate myself as much as I hate them. I want them to go away so I can stop feeling this way. I bite the inside of my cheek.

“We have come to take you to mate,” Cal says.

That’s direct and in no way alleviates my trepidations about them being here. “Why?” My voice trembles. I fist my hands trying to will away my reaction to their nearness. “Why are you doing this?”

“We are Monrok,” Cal says as offhandedly as if the sky is blue and I am an idiot.

“I don’t know what that is.”

“Monrok are the Elite Guard and property of the Zapex,” Kein replies.

Property? They do seem like an elite task force of some kind. Hard edged. Authority oozes from them. How could they be anyone’s property? They have that go, Army roughness about them times twenty. If the Zapex are powerful enough to keep these men under their command, what hope do I have?

“I thought you were humans.” A part of me had been comforted in a way by that fact. The part that knew my circumstances could be worse but did not dwell on how they could be worse.

“We are Monrok,” Cal repeats, seeming perturbed.

My own fuse shortens. “I still don’t understand what that means.”

Cal scowls. “We are the Elite—”

Kein raises a hand. “We will deal with this later.” His deep, rumbling voice makes me shiver. “Come, female.” He steps forward, holding out his hand, offering me the illusion of choice. The gesture is kind, if hollow.

Part of me wants to curl up in a tighter ball and never leave the safety of my mat. But I doubt refusal is an option. Before I can think twice, I take his hand and fight gripping it like a lifeline. He’s not here to save me, but, after days of being scared and alone, that’s exactly what his large hand wrapped around my smaller one feels like. Safety.

Taking Their Human by Aubrey Cara

Upon waking in a dimly lit white room, my biggest fear was that I had been kidnapped by a serial killer. I learned there are things out here in the universe much worse than anything on Earth. And, even if you escape, you can never go home.

They’re not kind, these being who stole me and want to use me as chattel. The others—part man, part machine— have claimed me for their own, but I’m far from saved.

Pallid Slave by Alta Hensley

My planet of Unin had all but been destroyed, and what was left was quickly being devastated by civil wars throughout. Everything I once believed, once knew, once fought ruthlessly to protect, had now vanished. Once I was a fierce warrior, and now simply a slave being transported by two brothers to a planet 720 hours away to mutate and die.

A lot can happen in 720 hours…

His Human Slave by Renee Rose

Collared and caged, his human slave awaits her training.

Zander, the alien warrior prince intent on recovering his planet, needs a mate. While he would never choose a human of his own accord, his physician’s gene-matching program selected Lamira’s DNA as the best possible match with his own. Now he must teach the beautiful slave to yield to his will, accept his discipline and learn to serve him as her one true master.

Their Captive Mate by Kallista Dane

Left stranded on the hostile world of Cephaia, Commander Cass Randall finds herself face to face with alien twins Ryn and Rom. Seeking revenge on humans for the death of their Mate, the warriors take out their rage and pain on Cass. But they discover the desire they feel for their captive is far more powerful than their anger.

Kenan’s Mate by Sue Lyndon

On my eighteenth birthday, the Kleaxians attacked and killed all the human males aboard the Stargazer. The females were kept as mates or slaves. I was taken as a mate. Lucky me.

The huge alien who claimed me is called Prince Kenan. He says he’ll never let me go—that we are bonded for life. When I defy him, he punishes me in the most humiliating ways imaginable. But sometimes he’s tender and loving. I try to be good so he doesn’t hurt me.

I don’t know what scares me more—that I’ll never escape Prince Kenan…or that I’m starting to fall for my captor.

It’s almost time!

winterstorm

Ok, I’m sick, my voice is gone, and I have fever and chills, but nothing is going to dampen my spirit today.

Our new book is about to be published – most likely today or tomorrow!

To show you how new I still am to all of this, I’m not even sure where the heck to post this! I guess I need a new page that says “Books by Katherine Deane” or something like that.  🙂  But for the time being, it’s going right here on the main page.

I am so excited, and am having a tough time focusing on my normal daily activities, LOL. Can you tell I am excited?!?

This will be my first publication- EVER!

My name “Katherine Deane” will be on a book!

On the cover! (Maybe even the back? I don’t actually remember how it works, but I’ll see soon )

And the part of the story that I wrote (with my awesome author friends, Casey McKay and Renee Rose), will be

IN THIS BOOK!

Made public- for anyone to see!

Ok, I’m going to take a few deep breaths, and calm down.

I understand the reality that there will be people who won’t like it, and some people who will voice these opinions very strongly.

But that’s all right.

Today, I am reveling in the warmth and beauty of accomplishing one of my long term goals.

> Becoming a published author.

My next post will be a bit more professional, I promise. 🙂

The brilliant Casey McKay has even come up with a scavenger hunt to get the word out. It’s going to be fun!  There will also be prizes. You won’t want to miss this one!

I’ve included a picture of the cover, made by the fantastically talented Korey Mae Johnson.

This picture is of my main characters, Bertram. He is the shape shifter / owner of the Lodge, and is a central figure in all the stories.

I’m so excited! He looks exactly like I pictured him!

And if you look closely, you can see my name!

I did mention I will be more professional on my next post, right?

My name is on. a. book!

Before I get swept up in all the emotion. (Yes, I can still crank it up a notch 🙂 )

Thank you so much, Renee and Casey for agreeing to do this story with me!  I loved how well our ideas meshed; how you came up with all the different ways to make this book unique; how you gals didn’t freak out when I cried or got overwhelmed with edits (that may have happened a tad bit); how you blended together to do this huge team effort; how you smiled, and let me enjoy the adventure of being a first timer, and didn’t belittle me for it. Thanks ladies!

Thanks James, Jamie and Korey, for working so hard with us. I’m sure it was a bit difficult doing three authors for a tandem story.

And thanks so much to our beta readers and supportive friends.  You gals know how you are. Without you, we couldn’t have done this. (And we probably would not have enjoyed the process as much without your support.)

Thank you!

Ok, friends.  Hopefully, sometime within the next 48 hours, I will be able to call myself officially:

Katherine Deane, DD’er, home maker, crafter, avid reader, runner, jack of all trades, and

published author!

hugs!

(ok, I’m going back to being sick now. 🙂
